Family Road Trip

Author, photographer, and founder of international craft and lifestyle website whipup.net and children’s e-magazine action-pack.com Kathreen Ricketson, is writing a new book ‘Family road trip’. Family Road Trip will be based on her and her families 2013 camping road trip around Australia, this book will be published by Shambhala Books lifestyle imprint Roost Books and distributed globally through Random House.

Our trip will take us, with our camping trailer, around Australia for a year. The kids (Otilija 12 years old and Orlando 10 years old) will be homeschooled and Rob and I will be working on the road. We have power, internet and our laptops and so theoretically we will be able to work from almost anywhere.

While travelling we will be working on The Family Road Trip book, as well as a few other projects (another book maybe), some freelance magazine articles, our online kids e-magazine Action Pack will be edited and photographed and put together on the road.

The book is not just any old travel book – it will be part on the road memoir, part family camping adventure how-to, but mostly it will be a whole bunch of fun projects that can be done in a day or a weekend by those who want to get away from it all and reconnect with their families.

One aspect of camping that I really love, is the camp cooking. We have a whole bunch of ideas and recipes and methods to try. We are also interested in long term family projects – each member of the family will use this year away to achieve some interesting goals — it is really a family sabbatical in that sense — one definition of sabbatical “A period of leave [used] for rest, study or travel. … usually taken for reasons of personal development”. We will all be using the year for some personal development as well as family time.
